UXO/MEC Removal Action - Conway Former Bombing and Gunnery Range (BGR), Conway , SC
The former Conway BGR was used by the Army Air Corps and the Air Force for air to ground gunnery and bombing training during WWII. After preparing site-specific work, health and safety and subsurface activities plans, geophysical surveys and MEC removal began. Activities included surface sweep, brush removal, and surface removal of UXO and OE on 900 acres of upland property. Following this phase of work, geophysical surveys were conducted to locate subsurface anomalies for excavation. Targets were re-acquired, and over 50,000 anomalies were excavated. Quality control was performed with geophysical instruments to ensure removal of all UXO material. Licensed, on-site detonation of UXO was conducted in combination with soil samples in the detonation area. All scrap and hazardous waste were properly disposed of, and a final report was prepared detailing the removal activities. All work was performed in accordance with US Army Corps of Engineers Data Item Descriptions for Type II UXO work.
